The Wonderful Wild West Shows Brought The West Alive
How Buffalo Bill and Wild West Shows Kept The West Alive
One of the earliest forms of outdoor entertainment was the “Wild West Show“.
The first and most famous of these was Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Beginning in 1872, Buffalo Bill Cody put on a Wild West Show that gave Americans a picture of what the West was like.
By this time, the West was starting to disappear in the sense that it was no longer the wild frontier. People were enthralled with this image of a wild place they had only heard about and might never see.
Each show started with a singing of the Star Spangled Banner, sometimes by Bill Cody himself. It is because of this tradition that modern day sports events all start with the National Anthem.
